When we talk about iconic theaters in Spain, there's one that shines brightly: Madrid's Teatro Real. A place that's not only part of the country's cultural landscape but also an international benchmark. With over 78.000 m², this giant houses one of the most impressive stage boxes on the European scene: 1.472 m² equipped with 18 mobile platforms capable of transforming according to the needs of each production. And with good reason, because here every production is a technical challenge. Up to 1.958 people can enjoy a performance from its main hall, spread over six floors, with 28 boxes, eight prosceniums, and a Royal Box worthy of its name.
A demanding venue, with an artistic program as ambitious as that of the Teatro Real, requires a technical infrastructure that's up to par. That's why the Teatro Real entrusted Stonex to update part of its lighting, control, and stage equipment. Our goal: to guarantee maximum precision and versatility to successfully handle the many productions that pass through its stage season after season.
High-fidelity lighting: ETC Source Four LED Series 3 Lustr X8
To renew its line of cutouts, the Teatro Real incorporated 22 units of the model ETC Source Four LED Series 3 Lustr X8, a market benchmark for its color fidelity and ability to adapt to the most demanding needs of any lighting design. Thanks to its eight-color engine with the new Deep Red LED, this luminaire offers superior reproduction of warm tones and skin tones, ideal for opera and large-scale theater.
The perfect combination of power, precision and respect for color allows the wardrobe of Othello or the emotional environments of La Traviata come alive with unparalleled chromatic richness. A sure bet, prepared for every lighting designer's and set designer's specifications.
Absolute control with Eos Apex: the next generation of ETC consoles
To complete the upgrade of the ETC system, the Teatro Real incorporated two consoles from the new range of ETC: Apex 10 y Apex 5, leaders in professional lighting control. These consoles take full advantage of the S4 Series 3's capabilities, offering advanced color management tools, detailed transition control, and an intuitive and robust user experience for theater operators.
The integration between the luminaires and the control system allows the technical team to work with complete confidence and creativity, optimizing time and elevating the quality of each installation.
Color, movement, and power: Ayrton's Hurricane Wash
To continue adding versatility to the stage space, the Teatro Real also incorporated 12 units of Ayrton Hurricane Wash, a fixture designed for large stages like this one. Thanks to its CMY mixing system, interchangeable frost filters, and impressive power, this LED wash creates immersive atmospheres with spectacular definition and uniformity. Perfect for filling an opera with color or adding subtlety to more intimate moments, always with a fluid transition and total control.
Surgical precision effects: Ayrton Ghibli
The set is completed with 10 motorized Ayrton Ghibli cutouts, a compact luminaire that stands out for its optical quality and high-precision blade system. Ideal for creating clean cuts, textures, and dynamic effects on stage without sacrificing power or definition. A fixture that responds quickly to stage design changes and effortlessly adapts to each new production that graces the stage of the Royal Opera House.
A firm foundation for all types of productions: complete renovation of the Teatro Real stage
It can be said that, to meet the technical demands of the Teatro Real stage—a space where work is carried out practically 365 days a year, with several productions a day and large-scale productions—it was essential to act.
Over its 25-year lifespan, the floor has endured the constant passage of heavy loads and the assembly of sets that require screwing and unscrewing in the same places over and over again. The wear and tear was evident, and the stage needed a complete overhaul.
In this project, we repaired the platforms that showed structural damage, and the remaining floor was resurfaced, planed, and leveled with a special technical paste designed for this type of surface. The goal was to leave the base ready and smooth for the new finish.
A high-density, compacted wood shield was placed on top of this surface, highly resistant and designed to withstand the Real Madrid's workload. Before its installation, a complete 3D scan of the set was carried out, allowing each cut to be defined with millimeter precision and the material to be divided into standard-sized panels. This way, the technical team can count on spare parts for easy replacement if necessary.
And all this in record time. Because the Teatro Real only shuts down its operations for a few weeks during the summer, work had to be done on all the stage platforms: from the main ones—more than 20 in total—to the back pit, the chazena, the shoulders, and the upper stage level. The reference guides were also replaced, and several power and signal box covers were replaced.
The result? Years later, not a single panel has needed replacing. The new floor is perfectly capable of withstanding the demanding demands of one of Europe's busiest theaters. A firm foundation, both literally and technically, for continuing to build great stories on stage.
